Garden City Beach Renourishment — 2026 Status

Garden City is complete — and with it, the entire Grand Strand project. The dredge finished the final stretch south of the Garden City Pier, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officially declared the $72 million project done on August 15, 2026. All beaches and accesses have reopened.

What to Know

• Garden City and Surfside Beach formed Reach 3, the closing segment of the $72 million project. USACE’s final tally: more than 600,000 cubic yards of sand along 7.7 miles across the two communities, completed August 15, 2026.
• Sand placement in Garden City began in late July 2026 between Moonfish Lane and public beach access point No. 6, then finished with the stretch south of the Garden City Pier (Holly Avenue to public beach access point No. 27) in mid-August.
• In early August the dredge recovered a piece of unexploded ordnance just south of the pier — the first such find of the project; work paused while the Horry County Sheriff’s Office EOD team and Shaw Air Force Base disposed of it, then resumed.
• All Garden City accesses have reopened. No further renourishment work is scheduled.
• Note: the southern tip of Garden City — south of 1303 South Waccamaw Drive — was outside the federal project footprint and did not receive sand. The footprint comes from a 1990s feasibility study, and USACE says it has no authority to work beyond it.
